    In retaliation for the April 5 bombing of the La Belle Discotheque in West Berlin, Ronald Reagan orders bombing raids against the cityies of Tripoli and Benghazi, Libya. 60 people were killed in the bombings.
  • April 14th 1912 : The Titanic sinks
    The RMS Titanic, a British ocean liner, strikes an iceberg in the North Atlantic and plunges beneath the waves. 1,500 people lose their lives in the sinking which occurred during her maiden voyage.
  • April 14th 1865 : Abraham Lincoln assassinated
    Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth American President, is shot by actor John Wilkes Booth while watching a play at the Ford Theater. He died the following day of a gunshot wound to the head. He is the first president to be assassinated.
  • April 14th 1828 : First Webster dictionary copyrighted
    Noah Webster, creater of the popular Webster dictionary, copyrighted his first edition. His name has become synonymous in the United States with the word "dictionary" and has taught five generations to learn to read and spell.
  • April 14th 1471 : Edward IV retakes the throne
    Edward IV of England defeats the Lancastrians at the battle of Barnet. The Lancastrian leader, the Earl of Warwick, is defeated and killed allowing Edward IV to resume the throne.
