Sarah Michelle Gellar: More Than Buffy

Sarah Michelle Gellar was born April 14, 1977 in New York City as the only child of Jewish American parents. When she was just four years old she was discovered by an agent at a restaurant in Manhattan. Only two weeks later she was auditioning for her first part. She was cast in the film, An Invasion of Privacy. Within a short period of time she also appeared in a commercial for Burger King. The commercial, in which she criticized McDonalds, proved to be quite controversial. A lawsuit was brought again Burger King as well as the ad agency responsible for the commercial and even the young child actress. The case was eventually settled out of court.

Gellar continued making commercials as well as having small roles on TV. During her childhood she attended Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School in New York while continuing her acting career. Her works during this time included appearances on Spenser: For Hire, Funny Farm and Crossbow. Gellar was also a student at Professional Children’s School; home to other notable students such as Tara Reid and Macaulay Culkin. Gellar’s first major break arrived in 1992 when she was cast in the teen soap Swan’s Crossing. She then appeared in All My Children as the long-lost daughter of Erica Kane. That role led to a Daytime Emmy Award for the then 18 year old. After landing the leading part in the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gellar left the soap. Gellar’s film roles of late have included Cruel Intentions, Harvard Man, Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, The Grudge, The Return, Southland Tales and The Air I Breathe. She is married to actor Freddie Prinze, Jr.
