    Two jumbo jets collide on a foggy runway at the small airport of Ternerife in the Canary Islands. 583 people are killed. Amazingly 61 people survive. The jets were diverted to the Canary Islands following a terrosit bombing in Gran Canaria.
  • March 27th 1964 : The Good Friday Earthquake
    The largest recorded earthquake in the history of the United States strikes South Central Alaska. The magnitude 9.2 earthquake kills 125 people and inflicts massive damage to the city of Anchorage.
  • March 27th 1945 : Frank Sinatra: Honorary Oscar for "The House I Live In". Award given to the producers, scriptwriters, songwriters (of the title tune) and to Sinatra for their work in this short subject advocating racial, ethnic and religious tolerance

    Explorer Juan Ponce de Leon sights North America for the first time. The land he saw, specifically Florida, was initially mistaken as another island.
