  • April 19th 1956 : Grace Kelly marries Prince Rainier
    Grace Kelly, an American actress, marries Rainier III of Monaco in a storybook romance and marriage. Princess Grace, who was required to renounce her American citizenship, died in a tragic car accident in 1982.
  • April 19th 1934 : Shirley Temple debuts
    Shirley Temple debuts as the most sucessful child star ever in the motion picture Stand Up and Cheer. She starred in over 40 films in the 1930's. In later life she would become an American diplomat as ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia.

    Joan of Arc, who was tried for heresy and later burned at the stake, received beatification from the same Catholic Church who judged her a heretic. She was elevated to sainthood in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV.
  • April 19th 1587 : Francis Drake sinks the Spanish fleet
    Sir Francis Drake sinks the Spanish fleet in Cadiz harbor. Drake was an English privateer, navigator and naval pioneer. To the English he was a hero, to the Spanish a pirate. He died of dysentery while attacking San Juan, Puerto Rico.
