  • April 18th 1983 : U.S. Embassy in Beirut is bombed
    A sucide bomber destroys the United States embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. With 63 people killed, it was the deadliest attack on a U.S. mission to that date and marks the beginning of anti-US attacks by Islamist groups.
  • April 18th 1946 : The League of Nations is disolved
    The League of Nations, and international organization founded after the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, dissolves. The League had failed its primary mission, to prevent any future world war. It is replaced with the United Nations

    A devastating earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7.9 destroys most of San Francisco, California. Fires ravage the city and nearly complete the destruction of the city.

    Two lanterns were hung from the steeple of the Old North Church in Bostan Massachusetts to warn of the impending arrests of Samuel Adams and John Hancock. Paul Revere, William Dawes and Samuel Prescott ride their horses to warn people.
  • April 18th 1506 : Cornerstone of St. Peter's Basilica is laid
    The cornerstone of St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican is laid. The construction project of one of the most recognized cathedrals in the world took 120 years to complete. It covers 5.7 acres and has a capacity of over 60,000 people.
