Will Smith: All American Guy

Will Smith was born Willard Christopher Smith, Jr. on September 25, 1968 in Philadelphia. Smith has earned rare honors, become one of a select group of stars to garner success in the top entertainment mediums; television, music and film. During high school, Smith initially planned to pursue a career as an MC and actually began in that capacity in the hip-hop duo “DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince”, a group comprised of himself and a friend from childhood; Jeffrey “DJ Jazzy” Jeff Townes. The duo initially earned a reputation for producing songs that were often funny and always radio-friendly. Since that time Smith has continued to be widely known for his highly successful and usually profanity free music releases. Unfortunately, his early music career was not financially successful and by 1990 he was almost bankrupt. Almost in the nick of time he signed a contract with NBC for a new sitcom that would be built around him, “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air”. The show was wildly successful and as they say, the rest is history.

While “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” was still on the air, Smith began make appearances in films, including Six Degrees of Separation and Bad Boys. In 1996, when the show finally ended, Smith made a successful transition to a solo music career while continuing to pursue a film career as well. That same year his first highly successful film was released, Independence Day; which officially launched his film career. This was followed-up with Men in Black in 1997; firmly establishing Will Smith as one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood.
