Tyra Banks: Top Model

Tyra Lynne Banks was born December 4, 1973 in Los Angeles, California. Raised in Inglewood, she attended a Catholic private school. Due to her thin build during her childhood and teen years, she was often teased. As a result, Banks later reported she developed a problem with her self-image. When she was just 17 years old she landed her first modeling job with Elite. She had previously been rejected several times while trying to enter the fashion industry. At the time she did not plan to make modeling a career and was only interested in earning extra money for college. When she made the transition to the commercial market, her career shifted into over-drive. Banks became the first African-American to be featured on the covers of Sports Illustrated and GQ. She is most well known; however, for her stint as a Victoria’s Secret model. Throughout her career she has also worked as runway model in cities such as Milan and Paris as well as across the U.S. Just a few of the commercial companies she has modeled for include Tommy Hilfiger, CoverGirl, Nike, Pepsi, Yves Saint-Laurent, Escada, Chanel, Ralph Lauren and Liz Claiborne as well as many others. She has appeared on the covers of ELLE, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan and L’Officiel.

Banks has also hosted, judged and produced the UPN television show America’s Next Top Model. In 2005 Banks officially retired from modeling, making her final walk down the runway in the 2005 Fashion Show for Victoria’s Secret. Banks retired from modeling in 2005.
