Tim McGraw: Country SuccessTim McGraw, of country music fame was born Samuel Timothy McGraw in Delhi, Louisiana on May 1, 1967. McGraw’s father, Tug, was a relief pitcher for both the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets. While growing up in Louisiana, near Monroe, young Tim actually believed his biological father was his step-father, Horace Smith. When he was 11 years old; however, he discovered his birth certificate and the truth. After high school he attended Northeast Louisiana University on a baseball scholarship. After dropping out of college in 1989 he moved to Nashville in order to pursue a career in music. He was discovered outside a hot dog stand, where he frequently performed for tips. In 1990 he signed with Curb Records; however, his first minor hit didn’t come until two years later with a song from his self-titled debut album. Although the album did not earn much success it did spawn two minor hits. In 1994 his second album became the best selling album of the year. Although his first single “Indian Outlaw” was controversial regarding the way in which many people felt it portrayed Native Americans, the song actually became his first top ten country single. His second single “Don’t Take the Girl” also reached the top of the charts. That same year he won two Academy of Country Music awards. McGraw is married to country music star Faith Hill. The couple has three daughters together. The couple have performed and recorded together including the duet “Just to Hear You Say You Love Me.” |
