Taylor Hicks: The Soul Patrol

Taylor Reuben Hicks was born October 6, 1976 in Birmingham, Alabama. When he was first born he had blonde hair. His hair later turned dark brown; however, began to prematurely grey by the time he was 13. His father has stated Hicks began singing when he was five years old, often songs made popular by Michael Jackson and Kenny Rogers. Hicks plays both the blues harp and the guitar. After graduating Hoover High School in 1995 he attended Auburn University to pursue majors in business, marketing and communications. After three years of college he dropped out and moved to Nashville in order to pursue a career in music.

He performed at various venues and released two independent albums before making his first appearance on American Idol. During this time he did not hold a recording contract and so therefore did not violate requirements for contests of the very popular contest. Hicks has performed at the Playboy Mansion, the Talladega Superspeedway and on National Public Radio. Although he had originally planned to audition for American Idol in Memphis, when auditions there were cancelled due to relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina, Hicks instead flew to Las Vegas and auditioned there instead. During the auditions, Hicks found favor with Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul; however Simon Cowell reportedly felt that Hicks would not be able to make it to the final round. On May 24, 2006 he won the much coveted title, becoming the oldest person to win the title to date, at age 29.
