Shakira: Pop Beauty

Shakira was born Shakira Isabel mebarak Ripoll on February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla, Columbia to a Columbian mother and American born father of Lebanese descent. By the time she was eight years old, young Shakira was already writing and composing her own songs. One of the these first works was “Tus Gafas Oscuras,” about the grief of her father over her brother’s death. Two years later she tried out for the school choir and surprisingly was not accepted because her voice was considered to be too strong. Not long after she began competing in a weekly televised singing competition for children. By the time she was 13 she had appeared at numerous events in the local area. Through these events she came into contact with a local theater producer, who attempted to boost her career. It was through this connection that she came into contact with Sony executive, Ciro Vargas. Vargas was so taken with Shakira that he arranged for an audition for her with Sony executives. She was later signed to record three albums. Her debut album, Magia, was released in 1991 when she was only 15. Although the album did not do well, she followed up with Peligro in 1993. That album had better success; however, Shakira took time off in order to complete high school. She returned to the music scene in 1995 and released her third album, Pies Descalzos. This album helped to launch her career in Latin America. In 2000 she began a tour of the U.S. and Latin America. That same year she won an MTV Video Music Award for Favorite International Artist. Her crossover album, Laundry Service, was released in 2002 quite successfully. One of Shakira’s most successful albums, Fijacion Oral Vol. 1 was released in 2005.
