Ricky Martin: Livin’ La Vida LocaRicky Martin was born Enrique Martin Morales on December 24, 1971 in Puerto Rico. During his childhood he sang in the school choir and developed a strong interest in entertaining. After encouragement from his father he began to take voice lessons and then auditioned for a TV commercial. In 1984 he joined the Latin boy band Menudo to replace Ricky Melendez. His stint with Menudo lasted until 1989. The following year he signed with Sony to begin his solo career. He relocated to Mexico City during this time and also began to pursue a career in acting in local theater productions. His first album, Ricky Martin, was released in 1991. The album, which contained the highly popular “Fuego Contra Fuego” sold more than half a million copies. Two years later he released his second album, Me Amaras. In 1994 he moved again, this time to Los Angeles. While his second album went on to sell in excess of a million copies, Martin’s acting career was also beginning to take-off after he landed a role as a bartender on the very popular soap opera General Hospital. Moving yet again, to Miami this time, Martin began collaborating on his third album, A Medio Vivir. His first hit single, “Maria” achieved worldwide success. A Medio Vivir was certified gold and sold several million copies. This was followed up by Vuelve and his first appearance in a Broadway production; Les Miserables. Vuelve was certified platinum. After having achieved much success with Spanish material, Martin then turned his attention toward his first English album. His single “Livin’ La Vida Loca”, became a huge hit. The self-titled album stayed at the #1 spot on the Billboard Top 200 charts for several weeks and was later certified 7 times platinum. |
