Reese Witherspoon: Sweetheart of the Silver Screen

Reese Witherspoon was born Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon on March 22, 1976 in New Orleans, Louisiana. During her early years she lived in Germany for four years, where her father worked for the U.S. military. After the family returned to the United States, she spent most of her childhood in Tennessee. She graduated from a very prestigious private school and then attended Stanford University, where she majored in Literature. A year into her college studies she left to pursue an acting career.

Witherspoon had held an interest in acting for some time. Her first roles came with local commercials. When she was just 14, in 1991 she starred in a made for TV movie known as Wildflower, directed by Diane Keaton. She also landed a role in The Man in the Moon, that same year. Originally she had auditioned for a small role in the film but ended up winning the leading role. Her performance in the film garnered the attention of critics. Since that time she has built up an extensive filmography including dramatic and comedic roles. In 2001 she earned a Golden Globe Best Actress nomination for her role in the film Legally Blonde. Since that time she has become one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. After portraying June Carter Cash in Walk the Line, Witherspoon won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, the Screen Actor’s Guild award and the Academy Award for Best Actress. She is married to Ryan Phillippe. The couple has two children together; Ava and Deacon.
