    Antoine Lavoisier, considered the father of modern chemistry, is arrested, tried, convicted, and guillotined all on the same day. The discoverer of oxygen, he was also a tax collector with the Ferme Générale.

    Spanish navigator and conquistador Hernando de Soto reaches the Mississippi river and calls it Rio de Espiritu Santo, or River of the Holy Spirit. De Soto also participated in the conquest of Panama.
