    Pim Fortuyn, a controversial and charismatic politician in the Netherlands is assassinated during the 2002 Dutch national election campaign.

    George V becomes King of England following the death of his father, Edward VII. George V is the first king of the current dynasty, the House of Windsor. He reigned until 1936 and was replaced by the short lived monarchy of Edward VII.

    King Louis XIV of France moves his court to the palace at Versailles, which becomes the unofficial capital of France. Louis XIV, also called Louis the Great, ruled France for 72 years, taking the throne at the young age of 5.
  • May 6th 1527 : Spanish and German troops sack Rome
    Spanish and German troops, under the command of Charles V, sack Rome in what some consider the end of the Renaissance. 147 Swiss Guards, including their commander, died during the fighting. Pope Clement VII escaped.
