    Aldo Moro, five-time Prime Minister of Italy and one of the most important leaders of his party Democrazia Cristiana (Christian Democrats) is kidnapped by terrorists from the Red Brigades and killed in May 1978.
  • March 16th 1935 : Germany rearms its military
    In violation of the Treaty of Versaille, Adolf Hitler orders Germany to rearm herself. Conscription was reintroduced to form the Wehrmacht, or German Defense Forces.
  • March 16th 1850 : The Scarlet Letter is published
    Nathaniel Hawthorne's book, The Scarlet Letter, is published. The world is introduced to the world of the Puritans and main character Hester Prynn who must wear a scarlet letter A for commiting the act of adultery.
  • March 16th 1660 : The Long Parliament disbands
    The Long Parliament, which was established in 1640, received its name from the fact is sat almost continuously during the English Civil War until 1653. It was disbanded by Oliver Cromwell fearing they might disband his army of 50,000 soldiers.
  • March 16th 1621 : Plymouth Colony makes first contact with Indians
    The Plymouth Colony in modern day Massachusetts makes the first contact with the Indians when Samoset, a Mohegan, allegedly walks into the camp and greets them in English saying "Welcome, Englishmen! My name is Samoset."
