![]() Madonna: The First Queen of PopMadonna, one of the most controversial stars of our time, was born Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone on August 16, 1958 in Bay City, Michigan. As a child she was immersed in music at an early age at the insistence of her father. She also developed an interest in ballet and took classes for a number of years, the experience allowing to her earn a dance scholarship at the University of Michigan. Prior to finishing her degree; however, Madonna moved to New York City in order to pursue a career in dance. While perfecting her dance, she supplemented her living expenses with a number of low paying jobs. By the late 1970’s she had formed her own rock band. This would lead to several demo recordings and her rise to fame, starting in 1982 with her first release “Everybody.” Although this introduction to the music scene failed to make the top 100, it was successful enough to allow her to continue with two follow-up recordings. The following year her first debut album, Madonna, was released. After reworking the album, it finally managed to make it to number eight on the charts, signaling the beginning of her first true success. 1984’s Like a Virgin proved to be just the hit she was looking for, launching her into stardom around the world. MTV, which was just starting out, quickly picked up her music videos; many of which featured a controversial mix of erotica and sexuality. Since that time Madonna has gone on to sell more than 120 million albums while developing a moderately successful acting and film career. |
