![]() Living the American Dream: Lucy LiuGrowing up as the child of Chinese immigrants in New York, Lucy Liu has faced being cast in ethnic parts only and having to balance the American dream with traditional Chinese culture. Through hard work, Lucy has seemed to find that balance to achieve her own dreams. Lucy Liu finished high school in 1986 and went to New York University, but eventually transferred to the University of Michigan because she liked the atmosphere more. Her degree was in Chinese Language and Culture. While pursuing her degree, Lucy Liu included lessons in acting, dancing, singing, and fine arts. She didn’t start auditioning until her senior year in college when she tried for small part in Alice in Wonderland but ended up with the lead role. With that type of encouragement, Lucy delved into professional acting and moved to Los Angeles. From 1990 to 1993, Lucy Liu managed to get several walk-on parts in various TV series including ER, NYPD Blue, The X Files, and Beverly Hills, 90210. In 1996 she broke into movies with supporting roles in Jerry Maguire and Bang as well as other small movies. Lucy’s big break came in the form of an audition for part that she didn’t get again. This time the producer liked her so much that he created a part for her in the series Ally McBeal. This exposure led to more and bigger roles in movies such as Payback, Play It to the Bone, Shanghai Noon, and Charlie’s Angels. Since she knows the knife and stick fighting style of martial arts called Kali-Eskrima-Silat, Lucy Liu has served well in roles that require a beautiful lady who knows how to fight. Lucy Liu is well-rounded with musical and artistic talents as well. She even has received a grant to go to China to study and create art. With all the talent that Lucy Liu possesses, we are sure to see a great deal more of her in the future. |
