Keith Urban: The Australian CowboyBorn in New Zealand, Keith Urban grew up in Australia where he had decided by the age of seven that he would be a country star in Nashville. He had started learning to play the guitar at six and by eight he was winning talent contests with it. Amazingly, he already had a band was making local bookings by the time he was twelve. Doing well, he decided to quit school when he was fifteen to travel with his band. He began his professional recording career in 1990 by signing with Australia’s EMI and recording a solo album. When this album produced four No. 1 hits, he decided it was time to head to Nashville. He began here with the band The Ranch, but they quickly fell apart as Keith wanted to try a solo career. After battling cocaine addiction and losing is fiancé to it, he cleaned up and released his American debut album in 2000, which won him three top five hits and the award of Top New Male Vocalist from the Academy of Country Music Awards. Keith Urban’s career was boosted once again when he released his album Golden Road in 2002. In the midst of personal turmoil, he had four singles from this album in the top three, while one remained no. 1 for eight weeks in a row. Eventually, the album became a triple platinum in the U.S. and platinum in all other countries in which it was released. Keith’s 2004 album, Be Here, also went triple platinum and earned him a nomination for best country album. Deservingly, of his 13 released singles, seven topped the charts at no. 1. Keith Urban has also made news with his personal life. After breaking up with fiancé Laura Sigler in 2002 due to his drug problems, Urban met Nicole Kidman whom he married recently on June 25, 2006. With a successful career and a new love, Keith Urban will continue to make hits. |
