Julia Roberts: America’s SweetheartJulia Roberts, an Academy Award winning actress, was born Julie Fiona Roberts on October 28, 1967 in Smyrna, Georgia. Her older brother, Eric, is also an actor of some repute. After graduating high school in Georgia, Julia relocated to New York in order to pursue a career in acting. During the early days of her career, she modeled as well as took acting classes in order to make her dream a reality. Her debut in film finally came playing a role opposite her brother, Eric in the film Blood Red. Although it was really just a bit part, it encouraged her to continue acting. In 1988 she starred in an independent film by the name of Mystic Pizza. Her performance in this film impressed moviegoers while her role in the next year’s smash hit, Steel Magnolias, truly put her over the top. In fact, this film garnered her first Oscar nomination. By the time she starred in Pretty Woman opposite Richard Gere in 1990 she had become a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. During the next two years she starred in three more successful films; however, this was followed by two years of virtually no activity. By late 1993, she was back on top; however, and starring in The Pelican Brief opposite Denzel Washington. Unfortunately her next several films were not overtly successful and for a time at least it would seem that her acting career might be at a standstill. Her role in the comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding changed all that. This film was followed up with Notting Hill and in 2001 with Erin Brockovich, a role for which she earned an Oscar for Best Actress. Since these hugely commercial films, Roberts has turned her attention to acting on Broadway. |
