Joaquin Phoenix Walks the Line to Fame and Fortune

Joaquin (pronounced Waa-Keen) Phoenix couldn’t help becoming a talented actor with the family that surrounded him. Born to John Bottom Amram and Arlyn Dunitz Jochebed in Puerto Rico on October 28, 1974, Joaquin found himself in a family that encouraged creative expression. That is just what he and his four siblings have done. You probably are familiar with his older brother River, but Joaquin does not like to talk about him in interviews since River’s death to drug overdose in 1993 on Halloween night. His sisters and he are all up and coming actors and actresses in their own right.

Joaquin began his career doing commercials as a child. However, being strict vegans, he and his siblings were never allowed to advertise meat, junk food, milk, or other animal by-products. This is still a strong value that Joaquin holds close to heart as he serves as a spokesperson for the animal rights group PETA. He also insists that his costumes are made of synthetic materials rather than leather or animal skins.

His first acting roles came in television roles. In 1982 Joaquin appeared on his brother’s sitcom Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and in 1984 he played in a made for TV special called Backwards: The Riddle of Dyslexia. Making it to the movies, he was on the crew of SpaceCamp in 1986. After a successful role in the 1989 movie Parenthood, Joaquin decided to take time off from acting and to spend time with his father who was separating from his mother.

After losing his brother River in 1993, friends encouraged him to get back into the acting scene. With that he landed parts in To Die For, Inventing the Abbotts, Oliver Stone’s U Turn, and Return to Paradise. He played the insecure Roman emperor in Gladiator. With six films finished since 2000, Joaquin has definitely taken off. His latest movie Walk the Line showcases his abilities with his doing his own sound tracks for the movie. Joaquin Phoenix is truly finding his place in Hollywood.
