Jenny McCarthy: From Nursing Student to Playmate of the Year

Jenny McCarthy was born Jennifer McCarthy on November 1, 1972 in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from high school she attended Southern Illinois University and was interested in a nursing career. Born into a middle class family to a father who worked in the local steel mill and housewife mother, McCarthy recognized the need to fund her own education. Toward that effort she submitted her photo to “Playboy” magazine. Later the well known magazine accepted her and signed her as a model. She went on to appear in the October, 1993 issue and was later named as Playmate of the Year in June, 1994. While her first photo shoot only earned a modest $30,000, her Playmate of the Year award quickly directly attention her way. Moving to Los Angeles in 1994 she began hosting a Playboy TV show, “Hot Rocks”. The following year she began hosting “Singled Out” on MTV. This was quickly followed up with her first acting job the next year in a comedy, The Stupids.

McCarthy continued with her acting career while modeling for additional covers of “Playboy.” While many of her early television hosting and acting efforts were cancelled after brief runs, she seemed to finally hit her stride by 2000, guest-starring in numerous television shows including “Charmed”, “The Drew Carey Show” and “Just Shoot Me.” 2001 saw her in the very successful and popular horror flick Scream 3.

While Jenny McCarthy has won a Razzie for Worst Actress much of her popularity has come from a unique approach to comedy and the odd combination seeing a beautiful woman and admitted sex symbol do something gross.
