  • January 31st 1945 : U.S. Army private Eddie Slovik is executed for desertion
    In the first execution for desertion since the Civil War, US Army private Eddie Slovik is executed by a firing squad in France. He never actually deserted but merely stated his intent to desert.
  • January 31st 1929 : The Soviet Union exiles Leon Trotsky
    The Soviet Union exiles Leon Trotsky because of his role in an overthrow attempt of Joseph Stalin. He is later assassinated in Mexico by a Soviet agent named Ramón Mercader.
  • January 31st 1606 : Guy Fawkes is executed
    Guy Fawkes, the leader of the Gunpowder Plot to destroy Parliament and kill James I of England, is executed after having been found guilty of high treason.
