    The Beatles last public performance is held on the roof of Apple Records in London. Because they did not have the proper permits the impromptu performance is broken up by the police.
  • January 30th 1948 : Mohandas Gandhi is assassinated
    Mohandas, also known as Mahatma Gandhi, is shot and killed by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu extremist. Ironically Gandhi spent a great deal of his life fighting against violence in its many forms.
  • January 30th 1945 : The Wilhelm Gustloff refugee ship is torpedoed by a Soviet submarine
    The Wilhelm Gustloff, filled beyond capacity with refugees, sinks in the Baltic Sea after being torpedoed by a Soviet submarine. This became the deadliest maritime disaster in history with nearly 9,000 dead.
  • January 30th 1835 : Richard Lawrence attempts to assasinate President Andrew Jackson
    Mentally deranged Richard Lawrence became the first person to attempt assasination of a sitting U.S. president. He fired two pistols at Andrew Jackson, both misfired. Lawrence was subsequently beaten severly by Andrew Jackson with his cane.
  • January 30th 1661 : Oliver Cromwell formally executed
    Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England who was responsible for the disposition of Charles I is formally executed. Of course he had already been dead for two years.
