Gillian Anderson: Stage, Television and Screen

Gillian Anderson was born August 9, 1968 in Chicago. For a brief period of time following her birth, her parents moved to Puerto Rico and then relocated to London before returning to the United States when Anderson was 11. Finding it difficult to fit in because of her British accent, she worked hard at developing a Midwest accent in order to be better accepted. During high school she began to act in local community theatre productions; however, she initially aspired to become a marine biologist. Her success in local acting; however, piqued her interest in continuing with that at she eventually attended DePaul University Goodman Theater School of Drama and earned her degree in 1990.

After moving to New York at the age of 22 she began performing at the Long Wharf Theatre, supplementing her income by working as a waitress. Her early career was marked with awards for her appearances on stage; however, she relocated to L.A. in 1991 and spent an entire year auditioning for roles. She had not been initially interested in TV work; she did eventually accept roles for “Home Fires Burning”, a cable program and finally made an appearance on “Class of ’96”. After this role, she received the script for a new planned program, “The X Files.” After auditioning she landed the role that would become her most well known. That show would eventually run for nine years and also include a major film. For her role as Agent Dana Scully, Gillian Anderson won a Golden Globe, two SAGs and an Emmy.
