Drew Barrymore: Child StarDrew Blyth Barrymore was born on February 22, 1975 in Culver City, California into a well known and long established family of actors. Her grandfather, John Barrymore, had a long stage as well as film career while her grandmother and great-grandfather, Dolores Costello and Mauirce Costello were equally well known. Her mother, Ildiko Jaid Mako, was also an actress as well as model. Drew’s own career began when she was just 11 months old, at which time she appeared in a commercial for dog food. Unfortunately, this first gig ended badly when she was bitten by the dog ‘starring’ in the commercial. Her first critical acclaim came; however, she was 7 years old and landed a starring role in the 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. This early fame; however, appeared to have come at a cost. By the time she was 12 she had dabbled in alcohol, marijuana and cocaine, experiences she later described in her autobiography. By the time she became an adult Drew had overcome her substance abuse problems and was ready to for a career comeback. The way in which she chose to do that proved to be rather controversial, with a nude layout appear in the January, 1995 issue of “Playboy.” During this time she also appeared nude in several movies as well as flashed her breasts at David Letterman on his late show as a birthday present. As she has matured, Drew Barrymore has taken on more mature roles, many of them in romantic comedies such as The Wedding Singer. Finally finding her footing, she has more recently begun to produce as well as act, including the big screen adaptation of Charlie’s Angels. |
