David Beckham: Football from the StartDavid Beckham was born May 2, 1975 in Leytonstone, east London. During his childhood he learned an early love of the game through his parents, whom it has been said often traveled long distances in order to attend Manchester United games. Although he seemed to have inherited his parents’ keen interest in football, he did compete as a cross-country runner in the Essex championships, finishing first in his age group. Determined to pursue his first love, he signed a contract with Manchester United and made his first appearance in 1992. That same year he was one of a few select players who helped the team to win the FA Youth Cup. During the 1994-1995 season he was loaned to Preston North end; however, went on to make his first Premier League appearance in 1995 playing once again for Manchester United. By 1996 he had earned even more fame and success by scoring a goal while playing against Wimbledon. This led to his first appearance for the England national football team less than a month later. That allowed him to qualify at United; eventually earning the title PFA Young Player of the Year. During 1998 he played in all of the qualifying matches for the FIFA World Cup and even went on to the finals in France. Unfortunately, due to a problem with the team manager, he was not allowed to start in the first two matches. He did make it to the third match and helped the team win a 2-0 victory with a long-range free kick. The next few years; however, saw David Beckham as growing increasingly unpopular in the press. There was some talk of having him leaved United; but this was initially doused. In 2003 he finally left the club and joined Real Madrid. |
