Christina Aguilera: What a Girl WantsChristina Maria Aguilera was born on December 18, 1980 in Staten Island, New York. Much of her early years were spend in a Pittsburgh suburb where she attended school. From the time she was a small child she was interested in music and longed to be a singer. She began preparing for her future career by performing in local talent shows, where she gained notoriety. Three years later she joined the New Mickey Mouse Club along with other soon to be stars Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Keri Russell. The following year, when the show ended, Aguilera began to record the first of several demos. Her biggest break came when she Reflection for the Disney animated movie Mulan in 1998. This led to a record contract with RCA and the release of a self-titled album, Christina Aguilera in 1999. After the album reached the top of the charts, she followed-up with several more releases, including “What a Girl Wants”, in the next two years. In 2000 she won a Grammy for Best New Artist. The same year she released her first Spanish album, “Mi Reflejo”, a tribute to her Latino heritage. The following year she won a Latin Grammy award for the album.
