  • April 8th 1945 : Dietrich Bonhoeffer executed
    Dietrich Bonhoeffer, noted paster and theologian, is executed by hanging at that prisoner of war camp at Flossenbürg, Germany. Considered by many to be a martyr, he was allegedly involved in a plot to assasinate Adolf Hitler.
  • April 8th 1904 : 17th Amendment to to the United States Constitution ratified.
    The 17th Amendment to the United States Constitution is ratified, requiring the direct election of Senators. Previously, Senators were chosen by each state legislature and not directly elected.
  • April 8th 1820 : Venus De Milo discovered
    The Venus de Milo, also known as "Aprhodite of Milos" is discovered on the Aegean island of Milos. When discovered, it was in two main pieces (upper torso and lower draped legs) along with fragments of the the upper left arm holding an apple.
  • April 8th 217 : Roman emperor Caracella is assassinated
    Roman Emperor Caracella, who was noted for granting Roman citizenship to all freemen throughout the Roman Empire, is assassinated. He was killed by a disgruntled soldier and succeeded by the Praetorian Prefect of the Guard.
