Angelina Jolie: Actress and Ambassador

Angelina Jolie was born the daughter of famous actor John Voigt on June 4, 1975. During her growing up years Angelina attended Beverly Hills High School as well as the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. Her dreams of becoming a funeral director quickly turned toward an interest in modeling and acting. In the beginning of her career, she modeled throughout both the United States and Europe.

1995 saw her first starring role in the film Hackers followed up with a major success in 1998 with the television film Gia. She received critical acclaim for this role including a Golden Globe and Emmy nomination. Unfortunately this success was followed up with several unsuccessful roles until 1999 when she starred with Denzel Washington in The Bone Collector. Her 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider proved to be a major blockbuster hit. By this time she had become one of the most in demand actresses in Hollywood.

With her career firmly established, Jolie (who legally dropped Voigt from her name after becoming estranged from her father) then turned her interest toward several humanitarian efforts. In 2001 she was named a Goodwill Ambassador and has since traveled all over the world visiting refugee camps in order to make the plight of refugees better known to the public. The following year she adopted her first child, a boy from Cambodia. While the subject of her personal relationships, including a much hyped relationship with fellow star Brad Pitt, have often caught the media spotlight, Angelina Jolie remains one of the most popular and in-demand actresses in Hollywood.
