Winona Ryder: Girl, Interrupted

Winona Ryder was born Winona Laura Horowitz on October 29, 1971 in Olmstead County, Minnesota. She is named after a town near her birthplace, Winona. Ryder has reported that her family’s name was originally Tomchin; however, when her grandparents immigrated from Russia and Romania they were incorrectly assigned the name of another family with whom they were traveling, when they arrived at Ellis Island. Ryder is reportedly a natural blonde who dyes her hair black.

When she was seven years old she relocated with her family to a commune in California. While there was no electricity on the commune or television, Ryder developed an interest in acting after her mother showed her films on a screen in the barn. Three years later the family moved again, this time to Petaluma, California. Because she was thought to be a skinny boy when she entered junior high and consequently bullied, she was home schooled for the following year. Not long after she began to take her first acting lessons at the nearby American Conservatory Theater. While she was not cast in the first film for which she auditioned, the director did notice her and cast her in a subsequent film instead. She asked for her name to be credited as Winona Ryder in the film after a Mitch Ryder album that happened to be playing at the time. Subsequent films included Square Dance and Beetlejuice, the latter of which proved to be her breakthrough film. Since then she has starred in numerous other successful movies such as Heathers, Great Balls of Fire, Edward Scissorhands, The Age of Innocence, How to Make an American Quilt, Little Women, Looking for Richards, The Crucible and Girl, Interrupted.
