Vin Diesel: Actor, Producer

Vin Diesel was born Mark Sinclair Vincent on July 18, 1967 in New York City. He took up the name Vin Diesel while working as a bouncer. Due to the fact that it wasn’t a good idea to give out one’s real name while working as a bouncer, he elected to go by Vin Diesel. The Vin portion of the name is a shortened version of his last name, Vincent. The name stuck and he now uses it professionally.

He actually made his debut on stage when he was only 7 years old, performing in Theatre for the New City in Greenwich Village. Throughout his teen years he continued to develop an interest in theatre. After high school he attended Hunter College, where his interested in writing screenplays continued to solidify. During the early 1990’s he worked in filmmaking, including a short, Multi-Facial, which was screened at the 1995 Cannes Festival. The film is at least autobiographical reflecting the struggles of an actor who is always too much or too less white or black. This was followed up with Strays in 1997. The film was written, directed and produced by Diesel; who also performed in the film. It was selected to compete at the Sundance Festival that year and eventually picked up by MTV to be turned into a series.

In 1998 Diesel was cast for Saving Private Ryan. Further film roles included Pitch Black, Boiler Room, The Iron Giant, The Fast and the Furious and The Chronicles of Riddick.
