Tom Selleck: Magnum

Tom Selleck was born Thomas William Selleck on January 29, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan. Selleck who stands 6’4” is known as one of the most popular and best looking actors of his time. Selleck began acting with small parts and appearances in TV series as well as TV movies. In the 1970s he had a recurring role as Lance White in The Rockford Files.

In 1980 Selleck appeared in the role of Thomas Magnum for what would become a very successful TV series Magnum P.I. Ironically, there were six failed TV pilots before the series finally made it. The series ran for eight very successful seasons. Selleck was actually cast as Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark; however, he was unable to accept the role because the producers of Magnum would not release him. The role then passed to Harrison Ford, who made the role famous.

Selleck’s other work has included Three Men and a Baby, Quigley Down Under, High Road to China, Her Alibi, An Innocent Man, Mr. Baseball, In & Out and The Love Letter. While many may have thought his career was on the down turn, he enjoyed a very successful recurring role as a love interest of Monica Gellar on the hit TV sitcom Friends. Selleck also appeared as General Dwight D. Eisenhower in a History Channel made for TV movie Ike: Countdown to D-Day. While the role was quite a surprise for many of Selleck’s fans who had become accustomed to his western roles, he received critical approval for his performance. Most recent roles included appearances in Boston Legal.
