Tom Cruise: Love Him or Hate Him

Tom Cruise, one of the most well known and at times controversial starts of our generation, was born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV on July 3, 1962 in Syracuse, New York. As a child, his family lived in near poverty conditions and traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada after his parents separated. Due to his relationship with his father, young Tom dropped his father’s surname at the age of 12 and would since be known as simply Tom Cruise. After high school sports did not work out for him due to a knee injury, he turned to acting and obtained a lead role in a high school production. This peaked his interest in acting even further.

His first professional acting role was a small part in Endless Love in 1981; a romance-drama, which interestingly enough starred Brooke Shields. In later years, the two now mega-stars would go head to head in the media over opposing opinions of anti-depressant drugs, particularly the use of these drugs to treat post-partum depression. This first role was followed up with increasingly larger roles, including the films Taps and The Outsiders. In 1983 he appeared in Risky Business and almost immediately became a star. The same year he also appeared in All the Right Moves, another success. By 1986 he had landed a role in Top Gun, which proved to be the highest grossing film of the year and further propelling him toward stardom. While there were a few rocky moments in his career over the next few years, he managed to overcome them and by the mid-1990’s was starring in as well as producing numerous highly successful films.
