Sean Paul: Dutty RockSean Paul was born Sean Paul Ryan Francis Henriques on January 8, 1973 in Kingston, Jamaica. Paul was raised in a comfortable neighborhood not far from Kingston, where his mother was well known as a painter. Many members of his family are also accomplished athletes. His grandfather was on the first national men’s water polo team while his father also played water polo for the same team later on. Paul himself also played for the national water polo team for several years. He eventually left the team to pursue a musical career. Paul was primarily interested in dancehall music, although he also made connections in the world of reggae-pop early in his career. During this time he focused on writing his own songs as well as working as a DJ. His debut single “Baby Girl” was released in 1996. This first song proved to be successful and led to further hits such as “Nah Get No Bly”, Excite Me,” “Hackle Mi” and “Infiltrate”. He began to work on breaking into the American market in 1999. The following year he played in the Summer Jam 2000 in New York City. That same year he released his first album, Stage One. Several new tracks as well as numerous previous hits were included on the album. His second album was released two years later; Dutty Rock. This album proved to be highly successful around the world, with more than six million copies sold. His third album, The Trinity, was released in 2005. |
