Salma Hayek: Una Estrella

Salma Hayek was born Salma Hayek Jimenez on September 2, 1966 in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico to a Lebanese father and Spanish mother. Hayek’s father was an oil executive while her mother was an opera singer. Raised in a wealthy family, she attended a private Catholic school in Louisiana when she turned 12. An accomplished gymnast, Hayak had aspirations of competing in the Olympics at one time. After leaving school due to report behavioral problems, Hayak returned to Mexico for a brief period of time before relocating to Houston to live with an aunt. She remained there until she was 17, at which time she attended college in Mexico City to pursue a degree in International Relations. She never completed the degree; however. Instead she dropped out to pursue a career in acting. When she was 23 she landed a role in Teresa, a popular Mexican soap opera. Through this role she became a star in Mexico. Two years later she moved to Los Angeles. In 1995 she appeared opposite Antonio Banderas in Desperado; her first real film break. This was followed up by From Dusk Til Dawn and Wild Wild West with Will Smith. She also had a supporting role in Dogma. Hayek co-produced Frida in 2002 and also starred as Frida Kahlo. Her performance in this film landed her a nomination for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category.

Hayek was romantically linked with fellow actor Edward Norton for several years as well as Josh Lucas. Although Hayek at one time had limited fluency in English she now speaks several languages very well including English, Arabic and Portugese.
