Queen: "Bohemian Rhapsody"Queen is comprised of members Roger Taylor, Brian May, John Deacon and Freddie Mercury. The band was first created when Brian May and Roger Taylor joined the group Smile in 1967. When the lead vocalist of the group left in 1971 May and Taylor formed another group with Freddie Mercury, who had formerly sang with Wreckage. A few months later John Deacon also joined the group. During the next few years the members of the band worked on completing college and rehearsed together. By 1973; however, they had started on their first tour and released Queen. The first album was mostly metal and did not achieve as much attention as they had hoped. Queen II, their second album, achieved success early in 1974. Their single, “Seven Seas of Rhye,” reached the Top Ten. Queen II then reached the Top Five. With this success behind them, the group set out on their first American tour. In the U.S. Queen II had broken into the Top 50. Their third album, Sheer Heart Attack, was released just before the end of 1974. According to some reports, the album was the most expensive rock album to ever be produced at the time. “Bohemian Rhapsody”, the first single from the album, went on to become Queen’s signature song. One of the first conceptual music videos was produced in support of the song. In England, the song broke the record for the longest run at the No.1 position. Throughout the next several years Queen reached the height of their popularity and continued to produce prolifically. |
