Princess Diana: A Candle in the WindDiana, Princess of Wales, was born Diana Frances Spencer on July 1, 1961 at Park House on the Sandringham estate. She was a descendent of King Charles I and also partially American through her great-grandmother. When her paternal grandfather died in 1975, her father became the 8th Earl Spencer and young Diana became The Lady Diana Spencer. She briefly attended a Swiss finishing school while her future husband dated her sister, Lady Sarah. During this time she excelled in sports and had an interest in becoming a ballerina. The Spencers had been close to the British Royal Family for a number of years and in fact Diana’s grandmother served as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. When Prince Charles began to near his mid-thirties he came under increasing pressure to marry; preferably a Protestant from aristocratic background. Diana, who was 19 at the time, seemed to be a perfect match. At the time she was working at a nursery school. Her engagement to Prince Charles was announced in February of 1981 and they were married on July 29th of the same year. After her marriage she became Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales. The couple’s first child was born the following summer, Prince William of Wales with their second son, Prince Harry, born in September of 1984. While it was reported their marriage began to fall apart in the mid-1980’s the royal couple did not separate until December 9, 1992. Their divorce was finalized four years later. After the divorce, Her Royal Highness was dropped from her name and she became Diana, Princess of Wales. She died in an auto accident in Paris on August 31, 1997. During her lifetime she was often noted for her contributions to charity work, including campaigns against the use of landmines and assistance to AIDS victims. |
