    Notorious Chicago mobster Al Capone begins an eleven-year sentence for tax evasion. Capone's health declined while in Alcatraz prison and he spent his final year of imprisonment in a hospital. He died in 1947.
  • May 4th 1904 : Panama Canal contstruction begins
    The Panama Canal begins construction by the United States Army. Designed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, it reduces the trip from New York to San Francisco by more than half.
  • May 4th 1814 : Napoleon begins first exile
    Emperor Napoleon I of France arrives at Portoferraio on the island of Elba to begin his exile. Napoleon was allowed to keep a personal guard of six hundred men and was made Emperor of Elba. He escaped 9 months later.
  • May 4th 1415 : John Wycliffe and Jan Hus condemned as heretics
    John Wycliffe , English theologian and author of an English translation of the Bible, and Jan Hus, a Czech religious thinker, are condemned as heretics at the Council of Constance. Wycliffe died many years earlier; Hus was burned at the stake.
