  • May 16th 1770 : Marie Antoinette marries Louis-Auguste
    Marie Antoinette of Austria marries the Dauphin Louis-Auguste, later King Louis XVI, at the age of 14. At the height of the French Revolution, they are both guillotined and interred at Saint Dennis Basilica in Paris.
  • May 16th 1532 : Thomas More resigns as Lord Chancellor
    In protest over the pending divorce of Henry VIII from Catharine of Aragon, Sir Thomas More, a staunch Roman Catholic, resigns his position as Lord Chancellor of England. He is later convicted of treason and beheaded.
