    While attending a ceremony outside the shrine of the Virgin Mary in Fatima, Portugal, Juan Fernandez Krohn attempted to attack Pope John Paul II with a bayonet. Calling the pope an "agent of Moscow", he was unsucessful.

  • May 12th 1965 : Luna 5 crashes into the moon
    The Soviet spacecraft Luna 5 crashes into the Moon. The craft lost control when a gyroscope failed and crashed. It was the second Soviet spacecraft to "land" on the Moon. 24 Luna spacecraft were launched, 15 completed their missions.

  • May 12th 1937 : George VI is coronated
    King George VI of Britain is coronated at Westminister Abbey. George VI reluctantly accepted the crown after the abdication of his brother Edward VII. He died at the age of 56 in 1952 and was suceeded by his daughter, Elizabeth II.
  • May 12th 1551 : Oldest university in the Americas founded
    The oldest university in the Americas, the National University of San Marcos, was founded in Lima, Peru. Still in existence today, it is considered by most Peruvians as the most respected institution of higher learning in the country.
  • May 12th 1328 : Antipope Nicholas V consecrated
    Antipope Nicholas V is consecreated in a ceremony in Rome by the Bishop of Venice. Nocholas V, a claimant to the papacy, became the last antipope and was removed in 1330. Excommunicated and later absolved, he died in October 1333.
