Nu Metal is Linkin ParkLinkin Park is the foremost band of the nu metal music genre. What is nu metal? This genre first developed in the mid-90’s as the next step from grunge alternative rock. Nu metal is distinguished with distorted chords, strained vocals, and lyrics involving the angst of this generation. Often hip hop is incorporated into the sound along with thrash metal and electronic music. With the highest sales in the genre, Linkin Park can be called the most successful with 19 million copies of their album Hybrid Theory selling world wide. Each of the band members explored their music with various bands and combinations throughout college. Once the band began to stabilize, they realized they had to change their name from Hybrid Theory to avoid copyright infringement on a British name. After debating over several possible names, they settled on Lincoln Park, the park they must pass to get to the recording studio, but changed the spelling in order to afford to buy the domain name. Linkin Park’s first album was released in 2000. They began touring with Ozzfest after winning a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2002. In 2001 their most popular single “In the End” was released. They started their own fan club called the Linkin Park Underground which treats its members to free goodies each year. Their second album was released in 2003 and received great reviews selling almost 11 million copies in total. Linkin Park has also released DVD sets of live performances. Linkin Park has also taken a stand by helping victims of the Indian Ocean earthquake and hurricanes Katrina and Rita. With all this philanthropy, their production was slowed in 2005. However, they did renegotiate their contract with Warner Brothers Records, so we can expect more releases to total eleven in all. The next album is due out in the summer of 2006. |
