Kate Winslet: A British Rose of Sweet Success

Kate Winslet was born in 1974 to a family of actors. With her parents, uncle, and grandparents all involved in the theater, it is not difficult to see how Kate began her talented career early in life. Kate Winslet’s first professional role was in a cereal commercial, but she began formal acting training at that time and moved on to bigger parts soon thereafter. Between the age of 11 and 17, Kate had several small parts on stage until she received her first big role in the film Heavenly Creatures in 1994 at the age of 17.

In 1995, Kate braved a huge turn out for auditions for Sense and Sensibility. With over a hundred girls auditioning, Kate Winslet was singled out by Emma Thompson for the role of Marianne Dashwood. With this role, Kate won a British Academy Award and was nominated for the Oscar of Best Supporting Actress. Quickly following this award winning role, Kate Winslet played in two more films in 1996, Jude and Hamlet. The role that most people recall with any gusto is her character of Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic. This had her nominated for the Oscar of Best Actress which catapulted her to the position of being the youngest ever to have two Academy nominations.

After such acclaims, Kate Winslet decided to go with more independent films. Playing in Hideous Kinky and Holy Smoke in 1998 and 1999 respectively, she returned to the period piece Quills in 2000. By this time she had earned another two Academy nominations, making her the youngest to receive four nominations by the age of 29. With an early start in the business, Kate Winslet continues to shine.
