Kate Moss: The New Twiggy

Born in London, this waifish supermodel was discovered in New York while returning from a vacation. In 1988 at the age of 14, Kate Moss began her modeling career after Sarah Doukas saw her in the airport. With her extremely thin frame, Kate re-introduced the waif look around 1997 starting the big controversy over her weight. Many criticize her for making it popular to look like a heroin addict.

Even with this negative view, Kate Moss has done well working in ads for Calvin Klein’s perfume Obsession, and modeling for Gucci, Dolce and Gabban, Louis Vuitton, Versace, Chanel, and other well-known designers. Although she directly contrasts the supermodels of the 90’s, Kate Moss is still working in her 30’s which makes her a supermodel of her own kind. However, she seems to attract negative attention, especially when she was taped while supposedly doing cocaine in 2005. Losing several of her sponsors, she was saved by Virgin and has begun to regain work.

Kate Moss has an international following as she works with several French, Italian, British and New York designers. Magazines in all these countries have featured her in their fashion sections. Vogue has put Kate on the cover on over 10 issues while W has used her image on 17 covers. In 2005, even with the controversy, Kate Moss was named the winner of the Vogue/CFDA award as the Fashion Inspiration.

Because she never allows interviews, Kate Moss finds herself in the middle of rumors on several occasions. In 1998 she admitted herself to a psychiatric facility saying she suffered from exhaustion. Later, it was revealed that she was depressed and going through rehab for alcohol abuse although others speculated that it was for much harder substances. Of course with her extremely thin build, she has often been accused of being anorexic and doing cocaine, but she denies these claims.

Throughout all the controversy, Kate Moss still has a lucrative career. Reportedly, she has made 10 million pounds in 2006 alone. Whether she does have those issues she’s accused of or not, she does make one successful model.
