  • June 20th 1819 : First steamship to cross the Atlantic
    The Savannah, a 320-ton steamship, becomes the first one to cross the Atlantic requiring no wind-propulsion. It opened a new era in transatlantic crossings.
  • June 20th 1756 : Black Hole of Calcutta
    British prisoners of war are thrown into a small dungeon, later called the "Black Hole of Calcutta". According to accounts by one survivor, 145 prisoners were thrown into this small hole, and 123 died from heat exhaustion.
