Johnny Depp: A Career with Depth

Johnny Depp was born John Christopher Depp II on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky. At the age of 7, Depp’s family relocated to Florida. By age 13, after receiving a guitar from his mother, Depp started a garage band and later dropped out of school in order to pursue a career as a musician full time. He joined a local band, The Kids, and after becoming successful in their local area, the band relocated to L.A. Unfortunately, the band was never able to achieve the success they hoped for after Depp married the sister of the band’s drummer, causing conflict among the band members. In the following months Depp and his wife found it difficult to support themselves. Depp worked a variety of different jobs while his wife pursued employment as a make-up artist. It was through his wife’s employment that Depp was introduced to Nicolas Cage, who encouraged him to give acting a try.

Depp’s first success came with A Nightmare on Elm Street which allowed him to land the lead role in the television series “21 Jump Street.” By the late 1980’s Deep had become a teen idol. Seeking to change his image, he took a role in the 1990 film Edward Scissorhands. Since then he has starred in such movies as Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Corpse Bride. One of Depp’s most successful films turned out to be Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, a Disney production; for which he earned an Academy Award nomination.

While his acting career certainly took off, Depp maintained a strong interest in music and has even contributed to the scores of several films including Chocolat and Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
