Gwen Stefani: Just a Girl

Gwen Stefani was born on October 3, 1969 in Fullerton, California. After graduating high school she attended California State University. Since the age of 17 Stafani had held an interest in the ska music scene in L.A. and anticipated joining a ska band her brother Eric was planning to form his friend, John Spence. After Spence’s suicide; the band found itself in trouble.Gwen pushed ahead with the band and they soon began to play at parties and several other gigs. In 1991 they signed to Interscope and although their 1992 debut album did not do well they refused to give up, even going so far as to finance the 1994 Beacon Street Collection. By this time; however, her brother Eric had left the band in order to animate The Simpsons. Nonetheless, the band found its footing once again and produced a highly successful third album; Tragic Kingdom featuring such hits as “Don’t Speak,” “Spiderwebs,” and “Just a Girl.”

By 2004 Stefani was ready to write and record her first solo album Love.Angel.Music.Baby. Her single, “Hollaback Girl” proved to be very well received and went on to become the first digital single in the U.S. to sell more than a million copies. In December of 2005 she received a total of five Grammy award nominations, and although she did not actually win any of the awards it has obviously not hurt her career in the least.

In 2002 Gwen Stefani married Gavin Rossdale and gave birth to their first child, Kingston James McGregor Rossdale, in May 2006.
