Denzel Washington: From Prep School to the Silver ScreenDenzel Washington was born December 28, 1954 in Mount Vernon, New York to an ordained Pentecostal minister father and mother, who owned a beauty parlor. During his early years, Washington’s parents did not allow him to watch movies. When he was 14 his parents divorced and he experienced a period during which he rebelled. In response to this, his mother ordered him off to preparatory school; which allowed him to later attend Fordham University. It was here that he would discover an interest in acting and eventually earn a degree in journalism. His first film role came in 1975 with a made for television movie, Wilma. This would be followed up with a highly popular television program, “St. Elsewhere.” After appearing in the drama for the entirety of its six-year run he appeared in several minor films as well as on stage. In 1987 he received an Oscar nomination for Best Support Actor for his role in Cry Freedom, finally winning the award two years later for Glory. In the 1990s he went on to play highly acclaimed roles in movies such as Malcolm X, Philadelphia, The Pelican Brief, Crimson Tide and a romantic comedy The Preacher’s Wife. The year 2000 saw Denzel Washington firmly established as one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood, particularly after his appearance in the Disney film, Remember the Titans, which earned more than $100 million at the box office. The following year he received his second Oscar for Training Day. Beginning in 2002 he began to direct as well as star, beginning with Antwone Fisher. |
