Bruce Lee: The Legend Lives On

Bruce Jun Fan Lee was born November 27, 1940 in San Francisco. When Lee was born his Chinese father and Chinese-German mother were on a one year tour with the Cantonese Opera Company. Originally the rest of his name was Li Yuen Kam; however, it was later changed to Jun Fan. His very English first name was bestowed upon him at birth by a doctor at the hospital. Since his mother had not planned to give him an English name, Bruce was not used by his family. When he was 12 years old he enrolled at La Salle College, a high school, in Hong Kong. It was then that he began to use his English first name. In 1959 after he got into a fight with the son of a gang member, Bruce was sent by his father to live with a friend in the U.S. He finally completed high school in Seattle. During the 1950’s he was credited with a Cantonese name, meaning ‘little dragon’ in the movies in which he performed. He enrolled at the University of Washington; however, just before graduation dropped out to head for Hollywood. During his career he starred in the TV series The Green Hornet from 1966 to 1967. After the show ended his opened his own Jeet Kune Do school. Lee also appeared in Marlowe in 1969. He died on July 20, 1973 in Hong Kong at the age of 32 after suffering from a headache earlier in the day. In the intervening years there have been several conspiracy theories regarding the events surrounding his death. Some people believe Lee actually faked his own death and will return one day.
