Bon Jovi: Lasting SuccessBon Jovi was born John Francis Bongiovi. At the age of thirteen he began to play both the guitar and piano and also founded his first band. Three years later he founded an R&B cover band, the Atlantic City Expressway, and began to play in clubs in New Jersey. Before long he would also play in yet another band, John Bongiovi and the Wild Ones, still playing in New Jersey Clubs. In the summer of 1982 he began making demos and sending them out to record companies; however, this attempt to break into a larger market did not meet with success. The next year he won a local radio contest for the best unsigned band. In January of 1984 his newly formed band released their debut album, Bon Jovi. That album went gold with sales of more than 500,000 and allowed the band to begin opening for ZZ Top as well as Kiss. Although their second album was not nearly as successful, their third album, Slippery When Wet, proved to be an almost overnight hit. This album went on to sell more than 12 million copies. With two highly successful albums under their belt, the band went on tour. The fourth album released by Bon Jovi was also quite successful and contained songs that are often considered to be favorites among fans, including “Bad Medicine.” While there have been some changes with the band over the years, in 1999 they came together again and released Crush the following year. Like most of their other projects this album met with tremendous success; proving the band could still make it with the younger crowd. |
