Barry Bonds: Destined for the MajorsBarry Bonds was born July 24, 1964 in Riverside, California as the son of the former All-Star, Bobby Bonds. During his teen years he attended Juipero Serra High School and earned success playing numerous sports; football, basketball and baseball. It would almost seem fortold in the stars that Barry would go on to become a highly successful Major League player. In addition to having a highly successful athletic father, Barry is also the godson of Willie Mays and a distant cousin of Reggie Jackson; both of which are Baseball Hall of Famers. Bonds was initially drafted by the San Francisco Giants; however, he opted to attend college before pursuing a professional baseball career. During college he played at Arizona State University and then later began his major league career in 1968, playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He eventually left the Pirates in 1963 and signed a free agent contract with the Giants for a whopping $43.75 million over a period of six years. This is the same team with whom his father played for the first seven years of his career. With the Giants, Barry Bonds seemed to find his stride and later win on to win numerous MLB records, including most home runs in a single season. To some degree his success as a magnificent player, and many feel one of the best in the history of baseball, has been overshadowed by accusations of steroid use. This has not; however, kept him from continuing to pull in one MLB record after another. |
